SAFETY IN (AND OUT) OF THE HOME

Some of our kids are runners. Some do not feel physical pain in the way a neuro-typical person will, thereby increasing danger. Some of our kids are violent or self-injurious. Some throw things, write on walls, destroy possessions, open window and climb out and on, and on.

We present a short section with ideas and sites in an attempt to help make our lives, and the lives of our kids safer. Baby proofing companies can be contacted to inquire whether they will customize the more traditional safety products for use with an older/stronger/taller child. You could also hire a carpenter and totally eliminate the “middle-man”.

You could try to get some of the cost reimbursed by contacting Easter Seals, Assistive Devices or clubs such as Kinsmen and explaining your situation.

There are other types of safety issues.  You may want to look into getting a "medic-alert bracelet", learn how by clicking here.  Another option available is a  Med ID Card. You can even order Personalized Iron-on Clothing Labels, Name Tags, and I.D. Products by Indentifind.  Read up on Autism Safety Techniques "Understanding and Approaching Individuals with Autism" and "Recognizing Autism and Other Severe Developmental Disorders".  Both sites are geared toward those with no prior experience with autistics, but may come in handy for some of us.
